Truth and love
2 John 1 — Truth, love, and a closed door
The elder writes to the elect lady and her children, whom he loves in the truth, rejoicing to find some walking in the truth, and asking not a new commandment but the one they have had from the beginning: that they love one another by walking according to his commandments. Many deceivers have gone out who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh; such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist, and everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God. If anyone comes and does not bring this teaching, they are not to receive him into the house or greet him, lest they take part in his wicked works; the elder hopes instead to talk face to face.
Meaning: Love is walking the old command, not hosting a flesh-denying teacher. The little letter guards a household’s full reward: truth stays, deceivers stay outside, and joy waits on a face-to-face visit.
